Shanklands has begun operation as a resort in 1990 and tour operation since 1999. The property size measures 145 acres of which 125 remains virgin rainforest joining state own forest. In our efforts to conserve and sustain tourism, we have been working closely with the Smithsonian Institution, the Calgary Zoo, and the Bio diversity Section of the Guyana University along with Mr. Davis Finch of Wings. With these organizations we have been able to start the process of recording the Diverse Flora and Fauna on property for example 210 species of Birds, 7 out of 8 Primates, 11 of the 12 families of Butterfly in all South America, 56 species of Trees, Spectacle Caimans and a host of other Flora and Fauna.

Shanklands is a small family owned property and in 1999/2000 we received two awards towards Best Interior Cuisine and Best Interior Accommodation, this was in part sponsored by A Tour Operating Company “Wilderness Explorers” and a Holland Photography Company “FOTO Natura”. We have been recently recognized by the “Caribbean Tourism Organization” with an award for “Pioneer of Tourism in Guyana”. With Eco and Nature Base Tourism on the increase, we certainly do not want to destroy this natural habitat and would like to develop more and could only do so with the help of Eco and Nature Base Conscious people visiting our resort and taking part in our tours which also links you to the entire region of Guyana.

Accommodation in self-contained gingerbread cottages range from the luxurious to the rustic.

Powis Perch, our honeymoon suite is the ultimate indulgence with its four poster bed and porcelain pedestal bathtub.

Our other cottages, all named after the indigenous wildlife, offer a panorama of the river and islands below.
Sweeping verandahs with low hung hammocks and comfortable Berbice chairs create an atmosphere of relaxation and privacy.

For groups and budgets conscious travelers we offer ‘Bamboo Landing', the original dwelling of Max and Joanna Jardim when they were hand carving this beautiful resort from the rainforest, this old time bus now offers dormitory style accommodation for up to 12 persons in beds in the bus and under nets alongside the bus. It is popular with students, children and groups on a tight budget.

Shanklands offers you a variety of activities and things to do and see. Play croquet, volleyball, basketball, badminton on the lawns or enjoy a game of life-size chess or shuffleboard under a towering tree.

For those looking for some wet and wild fun? Water skiing, tubing, banana boating are all available at an additional charge or h op into a kayak and head for one of the nearby creeks.

Shanklands can take you on guided tours of the area to show you old Dutch Forts, secret waterfalls even a frontier mining town. Tours further afield to the Kaieteur Falls, the Rupununi Savannahs and other areas of our beautiful country can also be arranged.
